Gender, Wars and Chadors II
The second in a series of three panels tackling gender, wars and chadors, this session is a curator-led talk. The third panel will be addressed by artists at Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. The transcripts of these panels will be published in a limited edition book published by Mixed Media Publishing.

Saleh Barakat | Curator and Gallerist | Lebanon
A leading expert in Modern and Contemporary Arab art, Saleh Barakat founded Agial Art Gallery in 1991 and Maqam Art Gallery in 2008 in Beirut. He has advised on and collaborated in the acquisition of major collections of Modern and Contemporary Arab art and has actively promoted the development of a healthy market environment for creative expression in the Arab world. Barakat has curated several pan-Arab exhibitions, including the IXth Francophone Summit in Beirut and the 2003 World Bank Summit in Dubai; and an exhibition at the Beirut Art Center in 2009. He has also co-curated the first national Pavilion for Lebanon at the 52nd Venice Biennale and its touring exhibition in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Rose Issa | Independent Curator | Lebanon and Iran
For the last 26 years, Rose Issa has been curating film festivals and exhibitions of Contemporary art from the Arab world and Iran in collaboration with private and public institutions. Issa has advised major institutions on their acquisition of Contemporary artworks from the Middle East, including the British Museum and V&A, London; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Centre Pompidou, Paris and The Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane. She has worked and lived in Tehran, Beirut and Paris and is currently based in London, where she runs Rose Issa Projects.

Dr Anthony Downey | Programme Director, MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art
Dr Anthony Downey is the Programme Director of the MA course in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art (London) and an editorial board member of Third Text. He has published essays, reviews and interviews in numerous international journals including Aperture, New York Arts Magazine, Art Review, Untitled, Third Text, Wasafiri, Journal of Visual Culture, RES, Art and Architecture Journal, Brumaria, Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, Art South Africa, Next Level, Contemporary, Circa and Canvas. He has recently written on Contemporary Iranian art in Different Sames: New Perspectives in Contemporary Iranian Art and Iran Inside Out (New York: Chelsea Art Museum, 2009). He has lectured at Goldsmiths College and Birkbeck College.
