Today’s urban development is a medley of symbols, forms, cultural identities, colors, sounds, smells and movements. This landscape can be an inspiring starting point for designing experimental and playful typefaces that reflect the spirit of a cosmopolitan city like Dubai. The workshop will be an experimental and basic type design workshop designed for graphic designers and visual artists with no (or little) knowledge of lettering and font design.
The workshop will be conducted with 3 instructors/typographers, each with a unique set of skills and design approach. The participants will be divided into 2 groups of 15, with each group collectively designing a typeface in an intense 3-day period. Participants will then be invited to pair up into teams of 2 and design a poster (using their larger team’s font). The resulting 10 - 15 silk-screened posters will serve to showcase the fonts and will be exhibited on the 5th day of the workshop in Tashkeel or the Pavilion Downtown Dubai (to be confirmed). In addition to the workshop, there will be evening talks held at the Pavilion Downtown Dubai, open to a more general public, for which 3 additional speakers will be invited.

14.00 – 16.00 Finalize the font files (on FontLab)

10.00 – 12.00 Typographic poster design using the font on illustrator (Arabic Proverbs)
