Art - Politics - Debate

As the heart of politics and democracy in the Netherlands and the international city of peace and justice, The Hague is the best possible place for a combined platform for art, current affairs and debate.

The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Vrije Academie workplace for the visual arts have joined forces to set up a venue where the hot topics of the day can be addressed by means of both visual images and debate: this is Gemak.

A key focus of Gemak is the link between non-Western and Western art; Gemak is all about the different ways in which artists, academics, politicians and opinion-makers view current events, contemporary society, and political and social relations within it. This is reflected not just in the selected works of art, but also in the debates and activities that are organised at the centre. Gemak aims to facilitate the expression of the widest possible range of different and sometimes surprising views, in order to enliven the debate and move it in new and perhaps unexpected directions.
