Nomadic Traces // Tracés Nomades

The exhibition Nomadic Traces is a reflection on the important role that typography and writings have played across generations, defining the cultural identity of past and present civilizations. The migrational and transformative nature of writing, its ability to freely cross borders and to mix with other writing systems, testifies to the interconnectivity of people.

In our time, typography and writing have become an intrinsic part of our public spaces, and have come to define our multicultural and mobile way of life. The new generation of world citizens are the new nomads that carry with them the seeds of their original (visual) cultures and spread them to the rest of humanity. Today we need to speak about and promote an open and all inclusive global society, while upholding and creating a link to our older cultures and origins.

This exhibition takes writing out of the books and bring it into the fabric of everyday life. It poetically links the past with the present, showing in particular the wealth of Moroccan heritage through its three scripts, Arabic, Tifinagh and Latin. These writing systems are the binding agents of this exhibition. They constitute the core material for the production of new commissioned works by five young Moroccan/Arab/French artists. Their works reflect on and interpret with text and form the theme of contemporary ‘nomadic traces’ and reference the traditional crafts and nomadic cultures of the Maghreb.

The exhibition also displays information illustrating the history of the Maghrebi calligraphy, the Tifinagh script, and the design research project by the Khatt Foundation entitled “Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib.” This project brought together a group of type designers to collaborate on creating three digital font families that combined the Arabic, Tifinagh and Latin scripts, and unified them under one common visual vocabulary and style.

The ‘nomadic’ aspect is also scripted in the design of the exhibition itself. This exhibition is planned to tour across Europe and the Middle East after Marrakech.

A series of short documentary films will be screened, and events will be programmed for the duration of the exhibition: talks, a book presentation, documentary film screening, workshops and musical events.

L’exposition Tracés Nomades propose une réflexion sur l’importance du rôle qu’ont joué la typographie et les écritures à travers les âges. Elles ont défini et véhiculé les identités culturelles des civilisations passées et présentes. Par nature, l’écriture, en tant que vecteur de communication migre et se transforme. Sa capacité à passer les frontières et à se mélanger à d’autres écritures témoigne de l’interconnectivité des peuples.

Aujourd’hui, la typographie et l’écriture sont parties prenantes de nos paysages urbains et elles témoignent nos manières de vivre, à la fois multiculturelles et mobiles. Les nouveaux citoyens du monde que sont les jeunes générations sont de nouveaux nomades qui portent avec eux les graines de leur culture visuelle originelle qu’ils sèment au reste de l’humanité. Il est essentiel à l’heure de la mondialisation de faire la promotion d’une société ouverte et inclusive sans perdre le lien qui nous relie à notre culture et nos origines.

Cette exposition sort l’écriture des livres pour la transporter dans le tissu de notre vie quotidienne. Elle relie poétiquement le passé avec le présent en insistant particulièrement sur la richesse de l’héritage marocain et ses trois écritures, arabe, tifinagh et latine. Ces systèmes d’écriture sont l’enjeu même de l’exposition, la thématique centrale à partir de laquelle, des travaux ont été commandés à cinq jeunes artistes marocains, arabes, et français. Qu’ils soient céramistes, créateurs de bijoux, de mode, d’installations interactives ou d’installations culinaires, tous réinterprèteront de manière contemporaine le thème du tracé nomade en référence à l’artisanat traditionnel marocaine et aux cultures nomades du Maghreb.

L’exposition retrace également l’histoire de la calligraphie maghrébine et de l’écriture Tifinagh et présente le projet de recherche en design intitulé “Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghreb”, mené par la Khatt Foundation. Ce projet a rassemblé un groupe de typographes pour qu’ils collaborent à la création de trois polices de caractères numériques qui allient écritures arabes, tifinaghs et latines et les unient en un style et un vocabulaire visuel commun.

L’aspect nomade est également inscrit dans le design même de l’exposition qui après Marrakech tournera en Europe et au Moyen-Orient.

Une série de courts documentaires seront projetés et des évènements seront programmés tout au long de la durée de l’exposition: Discussions, présentations de livre, projections, ateliers et évènements musicaux.

About the project: Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib
A propos du projet: «la mise en relation typographique au Maghreb»
Les objectifs des projets de «la mise en relation typographique» est de créer des espaces de dialogue entre les cultures graphiques et typographiques du monde Arabe et de l’occident. Dans sa troisième édition intitulée Mise en relation typographique au Maghreb, un groupe de créateurs Européens (Espagnols, Français) et Arabe (Libanais, Marocains, Tunisiens) seront faire des recherche et seront développé trois famille de caractères typographiques multiscripts (arabe, latin et tifinagh). Ces polices de caractères, dessinées spécifiquement durant le projet, se sont inspirés de la longue tradition calligraphique du Maghreb et de l’Andalous.
