This workshop is an invitation to experiment with Arabic letters, learning their basic structure/proportions and re-expressing them with basic modules, drawing on Islamic patterns and contemporary graphic influences. The purpose of the workshop is to create a complete alphabet from basic modules using manual means of reproduction such as paper, rubber stamps, stencil, woodblock, linocut... and produce a small hand-bound booklet to present each finished alphabet.

Program

— Day 1
Short presentation about modular typography (Arabic and Latin examples) and modules in Islamic patterns and art.
Explanation of the brief. Sketching for the rest of the day.
— Day 2
Short presentation about the basic relation of forms and proportions of the Arabic alphabet based on the Naskh and geometric Koufi scripts. Short critique session of concepts.
Sketching full alphabet in detached form and defining the tools for reproducing the letterforms.
— Day 3
Refining the sketches and experimenting with the different means of reproduction.
— Day 4
Group critique session. Finalising the designs.
Beginning final production of alphabet booklets.
— Day 5
Production of booklets and preparation for exhibition/lecture (date and place to be determined)

Each session will be scheduled as follows:
Part 1 09.00 – 12.00
Lunch 12.00 – 13.00
Part 2 13.00 – 15:00
A sandwich lunch will be provided

FEES: FULL COURSE FEES MUST BE PAID ON REGISTRATION
Tashkeel members: 1800 AED
Non-members: 2000 AED

NB. Membership must be valid for duration of workshops to qualify for Tashkeel members rates.

Basic materials and equipment required for the workshop will be provided. Any additional materials required are to be purchased.Whilst every care will be taken to ensure that this workshop is conducted in a safe manner and environment, Tashkeel cannot be held responsible for any accidents and injuries that may be caused as a result of participation in this workshop.
