The Art of Lettering with Ancient Arabian Scripts

Instructor: Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, Founding Directtor of the Khatt Foundation and curator of Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts

The workshop will involve hands-on drawing and experimentation with various styles and writing techniques. It will introduce the participants to the expressive possibilities of lettering using the ancient Arabian scripts, thus linking ancient letterforms to contemporary design. The focus will be on creating a word or personal monogram and exploring certain letterforms and their (typo)graphic potential.

Workshop Breakdown:
12.00—13.00: 
Historical presentation on Archeology of the UAE
14.30—15.30: Historical presentation on the ancient scripts of Arabia (tour of the exhibition).
15.30—16.30: Sketching and lettering techniques.
16.30—18.30: Creating typographic compositions and styling.

Prerequisite: Participants in this workshop must also attend the discussion at 12:00pm on The UAE: 10,000 years of Adaptation, Technology and Social Cohesion.
