Neural magazine continues to celebrate 15 years of publishing teaming up with Ink-Elektro, a print on demand focused cultural association. A workshop held by Simon Worthington (UK) and Nat Muller (NL) will inform about the current strategies of publishing in different contexts in the ever changing online/offline publishing relationship.

Mute experience is quite unique in exploring new and innovative ways of conjugating an ethical and sustainable printed production with the myriad of possibilities of online technologies. Their projects and experiments has shed light on a different future for independent publishing.

"Precarious Printing: Contextual Tales of Publishing in the Middle East"
Nat Muller
What are the hurdles and difficulties of print publishing and distribution in a region which is politically volatile? Moreover, when does print make sense and when doesn't it? What has happened to the age-old adage of "Cairo Writes, Beirut Publishes and Baghdad reads"? A few case studies and personal anecdotes are analyzed and contextualized.

Biographies:

Simon Worthington (UK)
Is co-director and co-founder of the cyberculture magazine Mute and Mute organisation, London, and has been involved in various projects with the latter. In addition he is co-founder of 'Mag.Net (Electronic Cultural Publishers organization).

Nat Muller (NL)
Is an independent curator and critic based (mostly) in Rotterdam. She has held positions as staff curator at V2_, Institute for Unstable Media (Rotterdam) and De Balie, Centre for Culture and Politics (Amsterdam). Her main interests include: the intersections of aesthetics, media and politics; visual culture, (new) media and art in the Middle East. She has published articles in off- and online media. She has taught at the Willem de Kooning Academy (NL), ALBA (Beirut), the Lebanese American University (Beirut) and the American University of Dubai (UAE). She is curator-in-residence at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo from April 2008 to April 2009.
