Event:

Green Art Gallery Presents Laila Muraywid: Opening Reception Sat 9th May, 7:30 pm onwards

9 May 2009

Green Art Gallery is pleased to announce its first exhibition with Syrian
artist Laila Muraywid, entitled Blood Deeper than Shadows, presenting her
photographic and scuplture practice, together for the first time in the
Middle East.

Muraywid’s work is cyclical, with her photography both at the beginning and
at the end of the cycle; her photographs feed into her performances, which
are fed by her scupltural works. Mostly known for her work with constructed
jewelry, Muraywid refers to these objects as armor-like sculpture and her
walkway displays as performances. With this in mind, the photographs read
like intricate preparatory groundwork for the performance at hand.

All of Laila's work is constructed around the body. The body itself is a
multi faceted, multi-function work of scuplture. It is at once an abode of
sensuality and a shelter, it is inward retracting and outward gazing. It is
these series of ambiguities and tensions that make the strength of
Muraywid's photographic language: a language that simultaneously opens and
closes numerous plots and narrative potentialities.

About Laila Muraywid (b.1956, Syria)
Laila Muraywid was born in Damascus, where she graduated from the Ecole des
Beaux-Arts before continuing her studies in Paris. Alongside her
photographic and sculpture practice, Muraywid is also a renowned fashion and
jewelry designer where she successfully links the parallel worlds of haute
couture and art. Blending sculpture with haute couture, Laila Muraywid has
captured the attention of museum curators and fashion designers alike. Her
sculptural jewelry has been shown at the Institute du Monde Arabe and the
Musée Galliera in Paris. In the world of fashion, on the other hand, she has
designed and executed pieces for Jean-Louis Scherrer, Christian Lacroix and
Torrente. Her photographic work was most recently included in the
"Traversee" group exhibition at the last Art Paris in Paris and at
Waterhouse and Dodd in London as part of their Middle East contemporary art
exhibition, entitled "Routes". She currently lives and works in Paris.
