A Perspective on Arabic Type, Identity & Culture
The notion of contemporaneity in Arabic type is a fairly recent and debatably vague one. The prevailing dichotomy is between those who believe Arabic type should stay as close as possible to its calligraphic form and those who believe in a clear cut between the two disciplines. As the field still lacks a substantial foundation, open conversations and research, efforts remain largely on an individual level. Within this context, Kristyan’s path led him to analyze the script thoroughly and to consistently explore virgin territories. He will talk about his own journey seeking contemporary expressions of the Arabic script through his type design projects and his involvement in education.

Laura Meseguer
On Process
Her talk will start with her last and ongoing project: Qandus Latin, part of a family typeface that was initiated at Typographic Matchmaking in the Maghrib project of the Khatt Foundation. The specific goal of the collaboration was the research and development of tri-script font families (Arabic, Latin and Tifinagh) that could communicate harmoniously and facilitate a cultural trialogue in the region. Along a period of a year and some extra months, the font is being developed as a system of which she will be sharing the design process and the results.
